Winged Mansion
This kitchen/mudroom remodel posed custom challenges that required custom innovation. Reconfiguring the layout elevated functionality while also creating showstopping spaces. Walls were moved and removed to create an open kitchen and useful mudroom for this family. Ample storage in the mudroom makes this space an organized first stop coming in or last stop when heading out.
The aesthetic of the space was inspired by a pair of winged rams-head table bases, formerly poised in the lower level of this historic home. Incorporating them into the plan for the new kitchen drove design decisions but also posed logistical challenges. Custom solutions were needed to winch each 400-lb sculpture from the basement to the kitchen. Securing them in their location required specially fabricated iron cross bars installed to insure complete stability.
The kitchen focal point is the custom-made Raw Urth hood. The island, made by Washington Heights Woodworking, is a stunning combination of walnut with a marble top. New spaces were made more comfortable by the addition of hydronic in-floor heat throughout the kitchen and mudroom.
