Up & Up

The new owners of this duplex wanted to expand their primary residence by including and renovating the upper unit. Their vision was to open up the back half of the lower floor and create a master suite on the upper floor. Moving the kitchen from one side of the unit to the other offered solutions to multiple challenges. Central bearing points were eliminated to create an open and light-filled space, now everyone’s favorite spot. The back staircase, formerly on the outside of the building, was enclosed. Utilizing exposed cream city brick, a new staircase was added at the front of the unit leading directly to the master suite.

Generous use of marble tile created a modern yet historically appropriate look for both the main bathroom and the master bath. The former pantry was stripped and a bright, new laundry room was installed avoiding a multi-story trip to the basement to do laundry. Of special interest in the completely new, relocated kitchen are the stunning birch cabinets which capture a MCM vibe while perfectly complimenting new and existing features of this residence. The master bedroom showcases a custom hardwood floor with a center made of hickory bordered by alternating cherry and birds-eye maple boards. All remodeled spaces on the second and third floors are made super cozy with new, in-floor radiant heat.
